Planning Laser Operations with LightBurn Layers
Study how Cuts / Layers, Preview, Framing, and optimization controls can support clear operation roles and sequencing before a job reaches the machine.
LightBurn separates work through Cuts / Layers and provides controls for operation settings and order. Its documentation also covers Preview, Framing, and optimization-related controls.
Structuring Cuts and Operation Roles
Map drawing elements to explicit process roles, then review the intended order and expected state. The map explains decisions; it does not prescribe machine settings.
Surface Raster & Area Marking
A surface operation shown before separating geometry so the artwork remains supported. Confirm the actual machine and material settings independently.
Fine-Tuning Cut Layer Parameters
Order by Priority & Group
Forces the motion controller to resolve closed inner vectors before releasing bounding contours. Ensures internal holes do not drop out of focal depth prematurely.
Lead-In / Lead-Out Vectors
Eliminates pierce marks and corner burning on visible edges by striking the initial beam off-profile and blending smoothly into the perimeter trajectory.
Air Assist Layer Switching
Assigns dedicated solenoid air pressures per layer: high-pressure blast for deep vector cuts to eject molten slag, low flow for vector scoring to prevent clouding.
Pre-Run Verification Protocol
Perform every verification step inside the LightBurn workspace prior to powering the laser tube. Use software simulations to expose travel collisions and out-of-boundary travels.
Workspace Framing & Clearance Confirmation
Execute Rubberband Framing to check the exact outer bounding envelope. Confirm honeycomb pin clamps, hold-down weights, and exhaust nozzles do not intersect the laser head path.
Time Estimate & Rapid Travel Inspection
Open the LightBurn Preview window (Alt+P). Scrub through the visual simulation slider to ensure rapid traversal lines minimize empty travel over previously dropped parts.
Optimization Switch Review
Verify that Order by Layer is strictly prioritized over generic distance shortest-path calculations to avoid early outer cuts.
